Here's how I took charge of my skin and said goodbye to my acne for good.
There's not much worse to a hormonal pre-teen girl than waking up to a bad skin day. I used to dread getting up to look in the mirror before school to see what I'd be working with that day. From toothpaste to tea-tree, you name it, I've tried it (anything cheap that the internet told me would cure my acne overnight that is.)
At age 16, I decided enough was enough, time to take charge and sort my skin out. Time to begin saving up for my first facial fit for a celebrity - if it's good enough for Victoria Beckham then it must be good enough for me - Right?
I decided to bite the bullet and go for the Elemis 'Anti-Blemish, Mattify and Calm' facial praying it would work wonders and calm down my troublesome skin - oh how wrong I was. Yet again my sensitive skin had won.
At this time, I was working in a beauty counter part time and all of the girls I worked with were raving about this amazing cleanser that had gone viral on YouTube and worked wonders for all types of skin (it almost sounded too good to be true!) and that we were getting one of their counters in store. So, naturally when the counter finally opened I rushed with my staff discount to get my hands on this so-called miracle worker hoping this would be my ticket to clear skin.
I have been relying on this routine for almost 3 years now and I haven't turned back since. Not only has this simple routine got rid of the acne underneath my skin but it has also relieved my skin from troublesome spots and reduced the oil levels drastically.
My Routine
Step 1: Cleanse and polish
The first step to my natural skincare routine, both morning and night is the Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser. If you're debating on trying anything from the Liz Earle range I urge you to try this, it has become my holy grail skincare product and to be honest, I can't ever see myself using another cleanser, at least for a long while. The mixture of chamomile, eucalyptus and cocoa butter seem to be the perfect combination for my skin.
Key Ingredients: Cocoa Butter, Rosemary Extract, Chamomile Extract, Eucalyptus Essential Oil, Hops Extract & Beeswax.
Step 2: Tone
The next step in my daily routine is to use the Liz Earle Instant Boost Skin Tonic. Once I use a cleanser on my skin, I often find my skin needs some deep rehydration. Using a cotton pad to apply the toner using upwards motion on my face and neck soothes, refreshes and brightens the appearance of my skin. Liz Earle also have a spray version of the Instant Boost Skin Tonic which is perfect for summer for a midday skin boost.
Key Ingredients: Aloe Vera, Calendula Extract, Chamomile Extract & Cucumber Extract.
Step 3: Moisturise
The final step is to deeply moisturise the skin, for this I use the Liz Earle Skin Repair Moisturiser. In Winter months when my skin struggles with dryness I use the Normal/Combination moisturiser however, in Summer I switch to the Light/Oily version as I find a thinner formula works best in the heat. I feel as if this moisturiser locks in my routine perfectly softening and conditioning my skin. It also lasts forever - which is a major bonus! A little goes a long way with this product.
Moisturising is the most important step in any skincare routine in terms of acne prevention. No matter your skin type a good moisturiser is vital. Daily missing reduces your chances of breakouts and excess oil development.
Key Ingredients: Borage Seed Oil, Echinacea Extract, Hops Extract & Avocado Oil.
A little something extra:
We all have those days where our skin just needs a little bit of extra help aside from our usual trusty skincare routine. To add a little extra hydration to my skin I use the Liz Earle Superskin Overnight Mask. I find this is the perfect radiance-enhancing treatment to nourish my skin. By using a thin layer once a week I find my skin feels smooth and firm when I wake up.
Key Ingredients: Borage Seed Oil, Persian Silk Tree Extract, Pomegranate Flower Extract, Cranberry Seed Oil, Shea Butter, Rosehip Seed Oil & Neroli Essential Oil.
